So, I kind of took a job…across the country

After graduating from The Ohio State University (yes, the) on June 8th I decided to stay in Columbus, Ohio for at least a few months. There were a number of reasons for my decision, but mostly it was golf related (Scarlet is one of the top college course in the country). Now that the golf season is almost over and I’ve become sufficiently bored with Columbus, I’ve decided to pack up and move across the country to San Francisco for a full time job.

I will be working as employee #10 (I think) and the first user interface designer at BleacherReport. The site is focused on providing sports fans with a forum to cover their favorite teams and debate current events in sports. They are growing very quickly and is definitely becoming a force in the world of sports.

The job makes a lot of sense for me because I am a huge fan of citizen journalism (I use Newsvine constantly) and ESPN is by far my favorite television station - I enjoy watching 20 different analysts debate the same topic all day (I have no idea why). Also the team they’ve put together so far is incredibly motivated and smart. This job will give me a chance to learn a lot about JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, and push me to get better with XHTML, CSS, and user interface design.

Over the past year I’ve talked to a number of startups - some bigger, some smaller, some no longer around - and have never felt like any of them would “fit” into my life, so to speak. After meeting the team at BleacherReport and considering their offer, this was a surprisingly easy decision to say yes to and I am excited to head out to San Francisco and meet so many of the people I have worked with the past 3 years doing freelance design.

Oh, and thanks to Noah Kagan for convincing me to at least talk to Bryan over at BleacherReport about a month ago, as initially taking a job was the last thing I was interested in doing.
